Person Specification: Youth Worker
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Key duties
- Support delivery of open access youth sessions at the Ranch site (Southmead Adventure Playground).
- Create opportunities for young people to thrive by delivering a range of positive activities.
- Provide accurate and appropriate information, advice, and guidance to young people.
- Offer and provide support and advocacy with and for young people through a variety of methods.
- Ensure young people’s comments, voices and suggestions are at the heart of the programme of activities, respond to their strengths and needs.
- Ensure the delivery and internal administrative tasks are completed in a timely and accurate manner as required by SDT systems and funders.
- Identify emerging issues and recommend responses relating to young people in the area.
- Safeguard the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults, working within organisational safeguarding policies and local authority frameworks.
- Undertake any training needed to fulfil the role.
Safeguarding and Health and Safety
- Carry out all duties with full regard for all Trust policies and procedures, particularly those relating to equality, safeguarding, health, safety and security, confidentiality, and data protection, reporting any concerns to an appropriate person.
- Safeguard the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults, working within organisational safeguarding policies and local authority frameworks.
- To complete any Safeguarding Awareness training as required by the Trust.
- Required for the role to undertake a DBS check and maintain annual membership through the update service.
- Ensure that the play and youth environments and outside areas are clean, safe, and secure and to report defects where necessary.
- Use, store, and maintain tools and equipment in line with Health and Safety best practice.
General Duties
- Have a flexible working approach which will require evenings, weekends, and shift work.
- To comply with all Trust policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL
Qualifications
- A relevant qualification in Youth & Work and/or significant experience.
Experience
- of working face to face with 13-19 year olds in a youth setting.
- of enabling and empowering young people to explore, to try things and build their confidence.
Specific Skills/Knowledge
- Able to provide young people with enjoyable, stimulating, and challenging experiences.
- Able to provide young people with appropriate information, advice, support, and challenge, and refer them to specialist help when required.
- Able to establish and maintain positive relationships with young people, including agreeing limits for acceptable behaviour.
- Able to use a variety of approaches creatively – matched to young people’s different needs, abilities, and interests.
- Good verbal and written communication.
- Commitment to developing knowledge of the area in which they will be working.
- Commitment to on-going professional development.
Attitude
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to work independently and proactively to solve problems.
- Enthusiasm for working with young people and families.
- Commitment to continual professional development.
- Team player with flexible approach to work and willingness to work outside office hours.
- To act as a positive role model to others within the organisation and stay calm under pressure.

Qualifications
- Level 2 or above in Youth Work.
- Additional qualifications in activity areas that interest young people.
- First Aid
Experience
- of Partnership working with a range of agencies and individuals.
- of using a variety of information technology and the ability to maintain records on a database.
- of accessing youth services and/or facing challenges and barriers similar to the young people we support.
Other
- Ability to collect and record data both manually and using IT.
- Knowledge of Southmead
