Days Like These: Neighbours to the Zoo Project

11/07/2024

On a bright sunny day in June this year, the Neighbours Connect gang ventured beyond the M5 to the beautiful and natural environment of the Bristol Zoo Project.

On arrival, we were greeted by the Zoo’s lush gardens and the sounds of exotic animals. Together, we explored the raised boardwalk overlooking woodland predators like wolves, wolverines, and lynxes. We also saw a big, lazy bear chilling out on a fallen tree log.

The giraffe and zebra enclosure were a favourite among the group. The statuesque giraffes, towering above us, were majestic and beautiful to watch. At one point, they looked like they were posing for us to paint their portrait!

Another highlight was the Gelada baboons feeding session. None of us had ever heard of them before. Geladas are found only in the highlands of Ethiopia, where their long furry ‘capes’ help keep them warm.

After a bite to eat in the cafe and a good chat, we headed home.

Days like these reflect the essence of Neighbours Connect Southmead. Spending time together, bringing a smile to our faces, learning new things (not only about our surroundings but each other), and fostering connection amongst Southmead Neighbours.

If you have time to volunteer for our wonderful group, we’d love to hear from you.
